Ayurveda adjusts food and habits to each season. Here is a quick guide to staying balanced through the year.
Ayurveda teaches that the body changes with the seasons, so the diet and routine should change too. This is called Ritucharya.
Summer (Grishma)
- Choose cooling, light and watery foods: buttermilk, coconut water, seasonal fruit.
- Avoid very hot, spicy and oily food.
- Stay hydrated and avoid the midday sun.
Monsoon (Varsha)
- Digestion is weak, so eat light, warm, freshly cooked food.
- Avoid raw salads, street food and stale leftovers.
- A little ginger or cumin in food helps.
Winter (Hemanta and Shishira)
- Appetite is strong, so nourishing food is fine.
- Oil massage (Abhyanga) and warm clothing protect from dryness and cold.
- Include ghee, sesame and warm soups.
Spring (Vasanta)
- Kapha builds up, so choose light, dry, bitter and pungent tastes.
- Avoid heavy, sweet and cold food and daytime sleep.
- Regular exercise helps.
Seasonal detox (Panchakarma) is often planned at the change of season. Ask us what suits your body type.
